XJ Athletics Club runners celebrated victory for their efforts and hard work after participating in this year’s Comrades Marathon recently.

They brought home medals, which some said will serve as a reminder of physical challenges overcome during the 98th ultimate human race from Pietermaritzburg to Durban. Others said the medals symbolise the culmination of training and dedication. Club spokesperson Bonginkosi Mbotshwa said that 35 club runners participated in this year’s Comrades Marathon compared to just 19 runners in 2024.

“The club had five female participants in this year’s Comrades Marathon and that was a huge achievement,” he said.

Club secretary Mawanda Mpithi was pleased with the performance by runners at the marathon. He further thanked the community for the support the club has been getting.

“The club was formed in 2018 and it has been growing, not only in numbers but in generating quality athletes,” he added.

Runner Vakele Jamile showed massive improvement in the marathon when he finished in a time of 6:29:08.
