COMMUNITY members of Njinjini in KwaBhaca (Mount Frere) have called for a permanent solution to address water scarcity in their village. On June 6, villagers welcomed ten hippo water rollers from the Department of Water and Sanitation.

The water rollers will be shared among the villagers.

The water rollers, designed to make water collection easier, will assist villagers when they collect water from rivers or when water gets delivered by water trucks.

Villagers will now be able to roll the barrel-shaped containers on the ground rather than carrying water in small buckets.

The Njinjini River, approximately 10km away from the village, has become the only source of water for the community when village taps run dry.

Villager Leticia Tshalane (72) said that the lack of reliable water in the area was having a negative impact on agriculture. Another villager, Sibongile Mahlasela, said she fell sick after she used water from a local dam. Sello Seitlholo, the deputy minister of water and sanitation, led community engagement in the area.
