Student protest at WSU

Police confirmed their presence at the Walter Sisulu University where a student was shot dead and another one injured on April 15 at the Mthatha campus.

Students are up in arms as police are trying to contain the situation. SAPS Brigadier Nobuntu Gantana said no arrests have been made yet. Police allege that students are preventing police from going to the crime scene as well as to get more information from witnesses.

African Transformation Movement (ATM) condemns violence at Walter Sisulu University and call for immediate intervention by the Department of Higher Education.

In a statement, the party’s national spokesperson Zama Ntshona said the party stands in solidarity with the students, staff, and community of the university in light of the recent tragic events that have unfolded on the Nelson Mandela Drive campus in Mthatha.

“We are deeply saddened to learn of the violence that has led to the shooting of four students and the loss of life of one of the students. Such acts of violence have no place in our educational institutions, which should be sanctuaries of learning, growth, and peace,” said Ntshona.
