UMZIMKHULU artist Masethembe ‘Skweletu’ Chiliza has been using unique instrumental pieces of music to keep his followers entertained. The Maskandi musician from the rural village of Iron Lash started singing gospel but later changed to the Maskandi genre after he gained inspiration from his father. In 2012, he learnt to play guitar and later worked on his solo music about love, relationships and social issues rooted in tradition but evolving with South African society.

He has released six music albums under his belt with popular songs such as Injendlini, Uthi Abafana Izinja, Ngiyazondlela and Ngifuna Wena among others.

He received the Best Newcomer Award during Khuphuka Nezakho Sibone Inkunzi Music Festival in 2018 and a R10 000 cash prize at the Impucuzeko Maskandi Festival for Best Newcomer in the same year.

In 2022, his song Injendlini won second place in the Ukhozi FM top 10. He has worked with Khuzani Mpungose, Mjolisi and Matollgate.

“I would love to collaborate with Jaiva Zimnike and Menzi Mabizela in the future,” he said while working on his 2025 album.

He released an EP in February this year.
