THE long Easter weekend for the community of Mpharane in Matatiele, Eastern Cape, will be filled with activities including the Easter soccer tournament set to bring together over 10 football teams to battle for the top spot.

The tournament will be hosted from April 19-20 at Skhokhong Stadium. It is organised by six village youths, namely: Tankiso Tenene, Rorisang Mabindisa, Kopane Nkholise, Motlatsi Maliwa, Humanity “Z” Gugushe and Seolane Maswatisi.

Organisers said 12 teams participated in last year’s tournament, which was meant to bring hope to young people.

“In 2022, I discovered that young people have gangs and they have joined the culture of shooting and killing each other. We were really concerned as the community. To introduce the tournament will help youth focus on sport,” organiser Tenene said.

Although the non-funded tournament faced financial challenges, it was a success last year.
