Prioritising safer initiation rites

SAFETY of initiates while undergoing the rite to manhood has become a priority in the Alfred Nzo district as stakeholders vowed to do everything they could to prevent any form of irregularity in the practice.

The winter initiation season is set to commence in the Eastern Cape province. Discussions and workshops between traditional leaders, traditional surgeons, and government officials are underway to educate individuals on child care and to ensure the safety of young boys during this time.

During last year’s summer initiation period, three initiates died in the Alfred Nzo district.

The Alfred Nzo district initiation forum has assured the public this week that it is more than ready for the opening of the winter initiation season.

It said it will make sure that no initiate loses his life.

“Parents should not worry about their children. We will ensure that all initiation schools are registered, and that traditional surgeons performing the procedures are well known in communities and are trustworthy,” said Sifiso Ntanga, the secretary of the Alfred Nzo district initiation forum.

He said police will play a crucial role in ensuring the safety of initiates and that no irregularities are performed in the name of the custom.

He added that police will patrol initiation schools to ensure that initiates are treated properly, and vehicles will be provided to assist initiation forum members when they monitor visits to schools.

The forum also emphasised the importance of initiates undergoing medical checks at healthcare facilities before taking part in the practice.

“Many children fail to disclose pre-existing illnesses, which can lead to complications or even death due to the lack of proper treatment,” stated Ntanga.

To ensure a safe and successful initiation process, certain requirements must be met, Ntanga added.

To be eligible for the practice, a child must be 18 years old; if they are 16 years old, they must bring a letter of consent from their parents. Traditional surgeons are also required to be registered, and must be at least 40 years old and above with extensive experience in performing the practice.
